Welcome to Reading Like a Pro!

This lesson will help you practice the three key parts of fluent reading. When you read fluently, it's easier to understand and enjoy the story. Click on a topic in the sidebar or one of the cards below to get started!

🎯 Accuracy

Reading the words correctly.

⏱️ Rate

Reading at a smooth, natural speed.

🎭 Expression

Reading with feeling and emotion.

🎯 Accuracy Practice: Find the Right Word

Reading words correctly helps you understand the real meaning of the story. If you read 'cat' instead of 'cap', the whole picture in your head changes! Let's practice finding the perfect word.

Teacher Tip: If the student struggles, have them sound out the word one syllable at a time. Discuss how changing one letter can change the whole word (e.g., mat vs. map).

⏱️ Rate Practice: Check Your Speed

Your reading rate isn't about being the fastest! It's about reading smoothly, like you're talking to a friend. Pausing at commas and periods helps make your reading sound natural and gives your brain a moment to catch up with the story.

The little fox was known for being clever. One sunny afternoon, he saw a bunch of juicy grapes hanging high on a vine. "I must have those grapes," he thought to himself. He jumped and jumped, but he could not reach them. After many tries, he walked away, pretending he didn't care. "Those grapes were probably sour anyway," he grumbled. It's easy to dislike what you can't have.

Timer: 0.0s

Teacher Tip: Model reading the passage first to demonstrate a smooth pace. Then, try a "paired reading" where you read it aloud together. This can help the student build confidence and rhythm.

🎭 Expression Practice: Read with Feeling

Expression is the 'music' in your voice! It shows the characters' feelings and makes the story exciting and fun to listen to. Think about how your voice changes when you're happy, sad, or surprised.

"I can't believe we are going to the park."

Teacher Tip: After the student reads with an emotion, ask "How do you think the character was feeling when they said that?" This helps connect the expressive voice to the meaning and comprehension of the text.

⭐ Putting It All Together!

You've practiced all the skills. Now it's time to be a Pro Reader! As you read the story below, use the checklist to help you focus.

Pro Reader Checklist:

  • Accuracy: Did I read the words correctly?
  • Rate: Is my speed smooth and natural?
  • Expression: Does my voice show the characters' feelings?

Leo the lion was not like the other lions. While they practiced their mighty roars, Leo loved to bake. His friends thought it was strange, but Leo didn't mind. One day, the lion king announced a great feast. All the lions brought meat, but Leo arrived with a huge, beautifully decorated cake. At first, everyone was quiet. Then, the king took a bite. His eyes widened. "This is the most delicious thing I have ever tasted!" he roared with joy. From that day on, Leo was the most famous baker in the entire savanna.
